AFTER THE CURTAIN
The Light Remembers
A novella by P. A. Rallax

In April 1998, Hollywood actress Evelyn Allen and Larry Carr vanish without a trace. No bodies are recovered. Two years later, Evelyn’s husband, celebrated actor Johnny Allen, is acquitted of their murders. The jury has delivered its verdict, but the mystery remains—and the public has already accepted a story with an ending.
Nearly three decades later, journalist Evelyn Hart begins examining the case for a retrospective. What appears at first to be a familiar tale of celebrity, scandal, and suspicion changes as she questions the evidence behind the headlines. Photographs carry altered captions. Old recordings and carefully maintained archives suggest that someone may have been managing more than a public reputation.
Her investigation leads to the French Riviera, where Clara Langford, Evelyn Allen’s sister, has constructed a quiet life far from Hollywood. Clara is courteous, guarded, and reluctant to revisit the events that once made her a public figure. But as Hart follows the documentary trail from Los Angeles to Europe, the accepted history becomes increasingly difficult to reconcile with what the records actually show.
Behind the apparent certainty of a notorious trial lies a more intimate mystery: the lives people perform for others, the identities they preserve in private, and the consequences of a deception that outlives the people who arranged it.
After the Curtain — The Light Remembers is a literary mystery about identity, memory, manufactured narratives, and the ethics of revelation. It asks whether discovering the truth always confers the right to expose it—and whether a public that demands an ending is prepared to understand what really happened.

Literary Companion: The Shakespearean Head Trick
On Identity, Performance, and the Art of Disappearance — an essay by P. A. Rallax.
Spoiler notice: This literary companion discusses the novella’s central revelations and is intended to be read after finishing After the Curtain.
In Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, a substituted head serves as apparent proof of an execution that never took place. In this companion essay, P. A. Rallax examines how that theatrical device illuminates the larger questions of After the Curtain: the difference between evidence and the events it purports to establish, the identities people perform, and the moral consequences of an engineered disappearance. The essay explores why a convincing public story can become more enduring than the truth—and why exposing a deception does not necessarily repair the lives it has changed.
