THE UNCHOSEN LIFE
A Metaphysical Novella by P. A. Rallax
About the Book
Daniel Mercer has spent much of his life thinking about the paths a person might take. At sixty-eight, a retired philosophy professor living in Santa Barbara, he is accustomed to examining a decision from every angle. Living with the consequences of decisions never made is another matter.
There are the choices he made, the possibilities he postponed, and the lives he can still imagine beyond the one he inhabits. When those alternatives begin to take on a deeper significance, Daniel must confront an unsettling question: are the lives we did not choose merely stories we tell ourselves, or could consciousness reach beyond a single course of events?
The Unchosen Life explores the relationship between possibility and commitment, free will and hesitation, the imagined lives that haunt us and the present life that still asks something of us. Its speculative vision of parallel realities becomes a distinctly human inquiry into regret, responsibility, and the courage to participate in an uncertain world.
